Latsest on IIT Workshops

IIT Workshop Roorkee   3rd April  2008

The oldest engineering institute since early 19th century and building India with brick & mortar, IIT Roorkee is in the foothills of Himalayas. Water management and seismic studies are naturally its forte.

IIT EU delegation was impressed with the open heart and the clear mind of its faculty and management. Many miles were crossed in a couple of hour’s sessions. There was a great bonhomie offered by the  IIT professors  in the faculty starting from the director  Prof Saxena and Dean  Admin. affaires Prof Manoj Arora. Also there was a  in-depth dialogue with students. The whole atmosphere was one of mutual understanding .

The  EU industries came back enchanted.

However as the EU engineering schools ECP and ENSAM were equally bowled over, we decided to let them take over from now on.

 Message from ECP And ENSAM

Deeply involved in the development of exchanges between students and faculty’s from two of the major French "Grandes Ecoles" and from IITs, this was however our first visit to IIT Roorkee, one of the most ancient engineering institution in India. Traveling from Kanpur, we passed successfully the entrance examination of Indian society… night travel in 2nd class AC. But Dr Manoj Arora and his team were there at the receiving end making it look like a trip to Disney land.

We discovered that it was really worth doing. Welcomed by the faculty members and students of IITR, we really felt at home. We’d like to thank Pr Manoj Arora, for the organization of this visit and particularly for his involvement in the afternoon student session. We would also like to thank Pr S.C. Saxena, Director of IIT Roorkee, for the faculty session organized in the impressive Senate Hall. All the faculty members, and particularly Pr Gupta, Dean of academic affairs and Pr G.L. Asawa, Head of the Civil Engineering Dept, took time out from their heavy semester end schedule to show us various aspects of teaching and research at IIT Roorkee. We hope to get an occasion to do the same.

In the name of the IIT-EU delegation, we finally thank all the students, who attended the afternoon session. By their questions and remarks, they have shown their awareness that all roads do not lead to the US. IITs and European schools could address specific energy and transportation challenges of Europe and India by strengthening Industrial R&D. We are looking forward to seeing you in Chennai in July. In the meantime, we’re available at www.iit-eu.org and also at www.ecp.fr and www.ensam.fr.

 Message from Fluidyn

I’m personally obliged for the hospitality accorded to European delegation by the IITK faculty and students. Department heads and faculty of Aerospace, Mechanical, Nuclear, Computer Sciences, Civil & Environment, took time out to discuss how best EU industry can open new options for our students. Some students though under pressure of upcoming exams understood the importance of the information and debated their future.

For visiting industries AREVA, EADS, FLUIDYN and IOSIS, it was also an eye opener. Being world leaders in their fields, we assumed that all those who are working in this field know about us. We discovered there is a long way to go for that. Students are smart, know not only about American industry but also banks and investment firms  but have no idea of what we are doing. AREVA can be the largest nuclear reactor manufacturer. Students may be flying everyday in Airbuses of EADS. IOSIS may pride itself in the state of the art in reactors and hospital building; Fluidyn can be the first supplier of modelling tools for environment & risk industry. But students are not making use of them in planning their careers.

Senior alumni and faculty should take notice. Information deficiency will not be compensated by technical excellence only. Elders are supposed to be chastened by experience. Young alumni will blame us for not to have opened appropriate opportunities for them whenever US economy runs out of steam. Technology sourcing options are also limited, as Indian industry, driven by these same students, has no clear idea of Europe. No prevarication is acceptable from us. Financial contributions alone will not support the excellence of our students.

Instead of same congratulatory messages, I feel that in Europe we should do more to come closer to future technical India. I’m sure with the help of, faculty and management, EU alumni will do all that it can to bridge the gap.

Sharad Tripathi. France

For the past three months in India, I have experienced many time the exceptional Indian hospitality, IITK was another perfect example of this. I would like to thanks all the people whom I have met there for sharing with me about education and research in India, engineer career plans, and student’s wonderings. I have found some similarities with the questions that keep me on the move during my cursus. I hope you also learn about EU system of education and way of thinking through the delegation. It should be a starting point for further exchanges of any kind. As far as I am concerned, everything is possible in a IITian’s life, not only in terms of career but also in term of cultural experiences.

Go to Europe, do not miss this opportunity.

Best wishes for everyone,

Thank you again,

Nicolas Lamorte, Bangalore

IIT Workshop Kharagpur  31 March 2008

Message from EADS

Our first thanks go to Pr Amit Patra, the Dean of Alumni Affairs and International Relations for his warm welcome and the wonderful organization of this visit. We would also like to thank all the faculty members that dedicated specific time so that we can discover and learn the various aspects of the teaching and research work done at IIT Kharagpur.

We met and  discussed  with IIT's Director, Pr D. Acharya, on establishing further collaborations between European companies, French "Grandes Ecoles" and IIT Kharagpur.

In the name of the IIT EU delegation, EADS wishes to thank large number of BTech, MTech and PhD students who attended the student session. We were very pleased by the interest they demonstrated towards our companies and to  Europe. In this processs, we  along with our French academic partners, were able  to address some of their concerns.

We are looking forward to welcome them in Chennai in July. In the meantime, we hope that they will visit us at www.iit-eu.org or directly at www.jobs.eads.com.

We strongly believe that we can work together for mutual benefit.

Dr Guillaume Alleon and Ms Barbara Cochard                                                   (EADS)

(EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2006, EADS generated revenues of € 39.4 billion and employed a workforce of about116,000. The Group includes the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the world's largest helicopter supplier Eurocopter and EADS Astrium, the European leader in space programmes from Ariane to Galileo. EADS is the major partner in the Eurofighter consortium, develops the A400M military transport aircraft, and holds a stake in the joint venture MBDA, the international leader in missile systems.)

IIT Workshop Guwahati  29 March 2008

IIT Guwahati is in the foothills of Himalaya alongside mighty Brahmaputra. A breath taking, pollution free and probably best site among all IIT's.

In the absence of Prof Gautam Barua who had to go away to US at the last minute, Profs Srinivasan and Prof Arun Chattopadhyay along with senior Faculty organized our interaction with students. A great exeprience for all delegation members.

A great potential of R&D growth is seen and all of industry as well as academia decided to have a special debate in Chennai on Guwahati

Message from IOSIS

The French delegation has appreciated the presentation of educational and research activities of IIT Guwahati and the deep exchanges which occurred in the fields of energy, construction and environment. The discussion on how to implement the cooperation, in practical terms, by exchanges of students, was fruitful. The delegation also appreciated the interest marked by the students following the presentation of the activities of the companies and of the possibilities offered in education, internships and jobs in France.

IOSIS, a major engineering company in France, was very proud to present to professors and students its various activities and the recently completed or ongoing research programs related to structures and environment.

The French delegation wants to express their gratitude to IIT Guwahati deans, professors and students for their warm reception and the fruitful discussion which took place during this very dense day.
